What is AQ?

The AQ is a self-assessment scale for autism spectrum disorders (ASD). It was developed to measure an individual's autistic tendencies and is also used to screen for autism spectrum disorders, including high-functioning autism and Asperger's disorder.

AQ is often used for screening for ASD symptoms and other purposes. The test provides information on one's tendencies in each of the characteristics of autism spectrum disorders: social skills, attention switching, attention to detail, communication, and imagination. The test is widely used internationally in both research and clinical settings, and corresponds to new ways of thinking about autism. *Because our office is not a medical institution, we do not make a “diagnosis”; we will work with the examinee to determine how we can resolve his/her concerns and help him/her in his/her daily life based on his/her ASD tendencies. If you wish to have a diagnosis based on the results of this test, please consult your medical institution.

This test is often used to screen for ADHD symptoms. It is a useful test that provides a quick indication of the extent to which ADHD symptoms are present and the extent to which diagnostic criteria are likely to be met. The CAARS can be completed by the examinee or by someone close to the examinee, and we offer the self-administered version. We are not a medical institution, so we do not make a “diagnosis”; rather, we work together with the examinee to determine how to resolve his/her problems and how to help him/her in his/her daily life, based on his/her ADHD tendency. If you wish to receive a diagnosis based on the results of this test, you will be asked to consult a medical institution.

Before)

D, who is in her 40s, came to AQ because she and her partner often have trouble communicating with each other and she questioned her own personality due to her inability to understand the other person's feelings. During the pre-test interview, D, who was not very social by nature and did not talk much, and her partner, who was sociable and talkative, talked about how they often did not understand each other and how their paths often crossed.

After)

D's test results were below the cutoff values, suggesting that he was not likely to be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. On the other hand, her results for “communication,” “social skills,” and “imagination” exceeded the cutoff values, suggesting that she may partially have characteristics of autism spectrum disorder. The test results indicated that D's poor social skills and communication affected her relationship with her partner, and that her low “imagination” to imagine others' feelings and intentions and to understand abstract conversations may have led to her inability to understand her partner's feelings. As a result of the test results, D has gained a better understanding of her own communication style and the situations in which she has difficulty, and has learned to communicate more in line with her own characteristics, such as asking her partner to explain things in more concrete terms. D's partner also began to listen to the test results and take action based on D's characteristics, and their relationship became better than before.

Even if the characteristics of ASD itself cannot be changed, the results of an objective test can lead to a better understanding of one's own tendencies, which can lead to a better self-understanding, a better understanding of the causes of one's problems, which can lead to a less stressful life, and a better understanding of others and the ability to adjust one's environment. This can also lead to a reduction in stress. For more detailed investigation of ASD characteristics, the WAIS-IV (Wechsler Intelligence Scale) may also be useful. In this way, we believe that the benefit of psychological testing is the ability to consider options that are appropriate for you based on the test results.
